Bacopa monnieri: the source of Bacosane®
Bacosane® originates from Bacopa monnieri, a medicinal plant commonly known as Brahmi. Valued in traditional Indian wellness practices, this small aquatic herb provides a naturally complex spectrum of phytochemicals, including eight standardized bioactives.
A small, creeping wetland herb
Bacopa monnieri is a small, low-growing, creeping and succulent herb belonging to the Plantaginaceae family. Its soft stems spread horizontally across moist ground and develop roots where the nodes touch the soil. The plant has small, fleshy, opposite leaves and delicate flowers that are generally white or pale blue.
The species is naturally associated with moist and wet environments—marshes, wetlands, ponds, riverbanks and irrigation channels across tropical and subtropical regions. In India it is known by vernacular names including Brahmi or Jal Brahmi. For details on historical Ayurvedic usage, explore our Traditional Uses section →
Whole-plant extraction
The whole plant — stems, leaves and other aerial tissues — is the recognized medicinal raw material. This is also the plant part identified by India's Ministry of AYUSH. Using authenticated whole-plant material helps preserve a broader botanical profile rather than focusing on one isolated molecule, providing the foundation for Bacosane® and its standardized phytochemical composition.
Warm, humid, continuously moist
The plant can be cultivated using healthy stem material, which establishes rapidly under suitable moisture conditions. Once a dense mat of mature biomass has developed, the whole herb is harvested — typically 75 to 90 days after planting. After harvesting, the material must be cleaned, dried and protected from contamination before extraction. Careful control of plant identity, maturity and post-harvest handling is essential because these factors influence the phytochemical consistency of the finished extract.
